Stephen Webber’s Stylus Symphony scored in Sibelius

Composer Stephen Webber, behind the decks at the premiere of his Stylus Symphony

Stephen Webber is a professor at the Berklee College of Music in the Music Production and Recording department, and he got in touch to tell me about his Stylus Symphony, a work for orchestra and turntables that he composed and performed in its premiere at the Berklee Performance Center in November 2008. Naturally, the work was scored in Sibelius!

Check out this video of excerpts of the work from YouTube (a higher-quality version is available at Stephen’s own site):

Stephen is currently working on recording the work using Sibelius and Pro Tools, and he’s looking forward to further performances of the Stylus Symphony: he told me that an invitation has already been extended by the Acropolis Theatre in Athens, Greece.

I’m not really a big fan of the whole scratching thing – but this was very exciting to hear!
