LCO New showcases student composers this week in London

News

LCO New: Explore ‘Inspired by Architecture’ is a composition scheme run by London Chamber Orchestra, in partnership with the East Festival (@eastfestival on Twitter) and Queen Mary University of London.

Following a Study Day for music students in November 2009, which featured talks from prominent architects and composers – a video from which is embedded above, with more available on YouTube – students were invited to submit a five minute composition for a ten-piece ensemble inspired by one of two RIBA award-winning East London buildings: the Frame House by Marcus Lee in Rowe Lane, Hackney, and the Hothouse by Cany Ash in London Fields, Hackney.

Six compositions were shortlisted and were workshopped at a public event during the East Festival at Queen Mary University on 6 March 2010. The six compositions will be premiered officially at 6pm on Wednesday 26 May in St. John’s, Smith Square, Westminster, London.

One composer will be presented with a prize of tuition with composer Diana Burrell and another with Sibelius 6, sponsored by One Source Computer Services, distributor of Sibelius products in the Republic of Ireland. The event is free, and the organisers would love as many people as possible to come along and hear the six new pieces by Solfa Carlile (RCM), David Futers (RNCM), Chris Garrard (Oxford), James Luff (Goldsmiths), Anna Menzies (RNCM), and Tristan Rhys Williams (Brunel).

Good luck to all of the student composers!
