Videos available from Mozarteum music engraving conference

News

In January 2020, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg hosted a new conference with the title of “Notensatz im 21. Jahrhundert Entwicklungen und Perspektiven“, or “Music Engraving in the 21st Century: Developments and Perspectives“.

Steve Aho attended the conference and provided terrific coverage for Scoring Notes.

Now, the Mozarteum University has provided videos from everything filmed from the first two days of the conference. The playlist is available on YouTube and contains 26 videos totaling approximately 17 hours of material.

Who needs Netflix when you can binge-watch an entire season’s worth of music engraving lectures!

Among the highlights is the keynote address by Elaine Gould, senior new music editor at Faber Music and author of the music engraving reference book Behind Bars: The Definitive Guide to Music Notation.

Her keynote address, entitled “Does everyone need high-quality engraving?”, runs approximately 90 minutes and covers the following topics, among others:

  • Proper use of spacing — both horizontally across systems and within measures, and vertically across the page
  • Staff size (which is often too small)
  • Clef changes, especially in cues. Contrary to common practice, use of unfamiliar clefs is not always ideal
  • When and when not to use repeats
  • Proper notation of tuplets
  • Clean, minimal layouts for parts

If that weren’t enough, there’s also video from the “Unconference” featuring discussions on LilyPond and Frescobaldi.

Thank you very much for posting this really interesting content! At the moment I wonder how I could miss that event, but in connection with Steve Aho’s article (including a link to all slides!) these videos let me participate some months later. :-)

Huge thanks to the people who made this free to view!

I’ve just finished making the timestamps to the first video (Elaine Gould’s talk). Looking forward to doing the same for the rest of them!
