When Apple released OS X Mavericks (10.9) two weeks ago, Avid noted issues with Sibelius 7 and Mavericks regarding how fonts displayed in dialogs and with ReWire capability. Subsequently, several users reported that Sibelius was performing sluggishly on their Mavericks systems.
While no solutions have yet been announced, Avid’s Sam Butler today has given a status report as well as a workaround for the performance issue:
I’ve been asked by several people for a status update on how Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 First are doing on Mavericks.
The issues we are tracking are:
- ReWire not sending audio from Sibelius to host
- Font used in dialogs is different (cosmetic only)
- Performance and responsiveness is not great
The workaround for the performance issue, which we’ve confirmed in-house, is to put your computer to sleep then wake it up. We are investigating the cause of this and have logged a bug with Apple.
I’ll post more news when I have it.
It is believed that the cosmetic font issue may be related to the underlying Qt framework in Sibelius not recognizing a subtle system font change in Mavericks from “Lucida Grande” to “Lucida Grande UI”. Theoretically, this affects only one line of code, so hopefully either Avid or Apple will be able solve this and the other issues in due course.

Now it’s a great time to Avid release an update showing us in fact that Sibelius is not dead.

Avid seems to have general problems with Mavericks. Pro Tools 11 isn’t working, too.
All other software I have on my Mac is updated and running, but I can’t update as long as these two cause problems. Not acceptable!

Hi Folks,
same with me. Used Sibelius 7 for a commercial workshop-transcription two days earlier and had the annoying feeling the whole thing doesn`t run very stable.
Especially repositioning and resizing of windows is very delayed. Dragging a sheet of three pages left or right causes major delays between mouse-input and execution.
The nice realtime-feeling in basic movements is gone.
Also the player doesn`t work. I press PLAY and nothing will play. STOP and the PLAY-Key isn`t responding, but stays still green… not very nice…

I also upgraded to Maverick. Dragging my score and inputting notes is extremely slow and very hard to work with with Sib. 7. Hope somebody fixes this soon.

Does this mean what I think its does?
With the announcement of Apple’s Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks operating system there are known issues with Media Composer 7 and earlier, Pro Tools 11 and earlier, Sibelius 7 and earlier, EUCON and ISIS. Avid will announce support for Mac OS X 10.9 with future releases of software.
Reading that, it looks to me like they don’t plan to issue any kind of fix for existing versions. “Future releases” does that mean releases which have to be paid for again? This is not looking good!

Anyone have word from Avid about when they’ll issue a Mavericks compatible update of Sibelius? They released Mavericks compatible PT11 last week … so I’m hoping it’s sometime soon ….

I’m logging in another vote for a Mavericks-compatible update of Sibelius. Please, Avid, please.

I am trying to activate Sibelius as I was given the message,”Cannot activate now” every time I tried and now I’ve run out of days, even though I paid for this ages ago. I cannot use Sibelius on my PC at all. Happily a friend did put it on my Mac laptop. I came into composition after a very long life of Eldercare when I couldn’t anything that I wanted/needed to do. So I’m not very “techie”. I have all the proper numbers but wherever I type them it is not acceptable. I’ve written to tech support but haven’t heard back. All I want to do is get back to composition! Any suggestions? Many thanks.

I have just purchased a new iMac which is running on the Mavericks operating system. I now find that my copy of Sibelius 5 even though finally registered on the new computer in fact does not work. Does anyone know when this problem is going to be sorted?

I’ve been trying to get a rough estimate from Avid about when they’ll have a Sibelius 7 update for Mavericks, and they’ve adamantly refused to say. However, looking at what they’ve done for their other software, I’d guess that you’ll have to upgrade to Sibelius 7 in its newest form to use Sibelius with Mavericks.
