The latest stop in our Overture series of first looks is ScoreTail, a browser-based music notation editor. There is nothing to install: open a score, edit it, play it back, and share it with someone else from a link.
Browser-based notation is not a new category. Noteflight has been doing it for nearly two decades. Flat has made real-time collaboration central to its approach, while Soundslice has built an interactive environment around notation, practice, and synchronized audio and video. MakeMusic still has Compose, their version of a web-based composition and notation tool. ScoreTail is another take on the idea.
Developer Makoto Tanji is clear about where he sees it. “ScoreTail is different from Dorico or Sibelius in that it targets casual users rather than professionals,” he told Scoring Notes. “We’re not trying to compete with pro tools — our goal is to make sheet music more approachable and shareable for everyone.”
He described that goal as “lowering the barrier to entry for people who enjoy sheet music but find traditional tools intimidating.”
That’s a useful frame for looking at ScoreTail, but there is also more in the editor than the description might suggest.

A quick tour
From the landing page, Try without signing up takes you directly into the editor as a guest. From the dashboard, + New starts a score from an ensemble template or from a chord progression using Easy Setup. You can also import MusicXML, compressed MusicXML, or ABC files.
Editing is divided into two main modes. Press N for note input and add notes by clicking, from the computer keyboard, or with a MIDI keyboard. A ghost note follows the pointer and shows where the next note will land. Press Esc to return to select mode, where you can navigate and edit existing notes.
The keyboard shortcuts were easy enough to pick up: letter keys for pitch, number keys for duration, Space for playback, and single-key shortcuts for many common edits. A minimap provides an overview of a longer score and a quick way to move around it.
When you’re finished, you can export the score or share it with someone else by sending a link.
More than a sketchpad
The panel along the left side contains more notation, such as dynamics and hairpins, articulations, ornaments, fermatas, arpeggios, fingerings, pedal markings, and octave lines. Make a selection and the panel switches to measure-level tools such as key, clef, and time-signature changes, pickups, and adding or deleting measures. ScoreTail also supports multiple voices, tuplets, repeats and endings, several barline types, lyrics, chord symbols, tempo markings, expression text, and rehearsal marks.

Lyrics go in one syllable at a time in a way that will be familiar to anyone who has used other music notation applications. Space or tab moves to the next note, and a hyphen continues a word across notes.

This isn’t the depth of engraving control that Dorico or Sibelius provides, but we’ve already established that’s not its mission. There is enough here, though, to write substantially more than a melody and a few chord symbols. A surprisingly full-featured contextual menu, available by right-clicking a selection, adds even more.

Playback and practice
Playback does more than check the notes. You can change the speed, loop a range of measures, and control the level of individual parts. Your own part can play at full volume against a softer accompaniment, for example. ScoreTail’s documentation presents this as a practice feature.
That brings ScoreTail into some of the same territory as Soundslice, although from a different direction. Soundslice combines its notation editor with a practice and learning environment built around recordings, looping, and synchronized media. ScoreTail starts with an editable score and adds enough playback control to make it useful for practice.
It’s become ever more difficult as the years and decades go by to pigeonhole an application into one category or another. A notation editor can also be a practice tool, and a practice tool may include an editor.
Sharing and collaboration
This is where the browser has a natural advantage. A public ScoreTail link lets someone view and play a score without installing an application. An editable link allows several people to work on the score at once. Each person’s selection is shown in a different color, and changes appear automatically.
ScoreTail uses Yjs, a framework designed to synchronize changes among multiple users. There is no save-send-revise-send-again cycle while the collaboration is taking place.
Flat has offered this kind of simultaneous notation editing for years, with user presence, permissions, comments, and version history built around it. Noteflight has long combined browser notation with publishing, sharing, and education. ScoreTail is entering an established field, not creating a new one.
In use, it is straightforward: open the same document, see who else is there, and watch the changes arrive.
Music notation software still largely assumes that a score file belongs to one person at a time. That person works on it, sends it to someone else, receives comments or a revised file, and tries to keep track of which copy is current. Shared folders make the handoff faster, but they do not necessarily make the document collaborative.
What would collaborative Sibelius or Dorico look like?
It’s tempting to ask whether Sibelius or Dorico could simply run in a browser, but I’m not sure that is the most useful version of the question.
A professional notation application has to deal with sophisticated engraving and layout rules, large instrumental forces, dynamic parts, playback, fonts, plug-ins or scripting, and many years of application-specific behavior. Recreating all of that as a browser editor would be a different undertaking from designing a new notation program for the web.
Real-time collaboration does not require the entire application to run there, though. The notation engine could remain in a native desktop or tablet application while the document and its revision history live in a shared service.
Two orchestrators might work in different sections of the same project. A composer could see an orchestrator’s changes arrive. A music preparer could correct the score while someone else works on the parts. An orchestra librarian might flag a problem at rehearsal and have the correction travel back through the same project.
That immediately raises practical questions. What happens when two people change the same measure? Who controls layout? Can a user lock a part or a flow while someone else works elsewhere? How are fonts and playback libraries handled? What counts as a revision, and can an earlier state be restored reliably?
The current desktop products contain some pieces of this idea without providing simultaneous score editing. Sibelius Cloud Sharing supports online viewing, playback, comments, and further editing by Sibelius users. Dorico projects can be opened from more than one device, but the application warns when the file changes elsewhere and asks the user to reload or save a separate copy. Neither is “Google Docs for an orchestral score”.
ScoreTail and Flat are much simpler than the professional desktop applications. They nevertheless show that simultaneous notation editing is practical. How much of that experience can be brought to Sibelius or Dorico without giving up their engraving, layout, playback, and part-management capabilities is the harder question.
Getting music in, out, and onto the web
For now, interoperability with ScoreTail largely means MusicXML. Files can move between it and programs including Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, Noteflight, and Flat, with the usual caveat that MusicXML carries the musical information more reliably than every application-specific layout decision. ScoreTail also imports ABC.
ScoreTail can generate an iframe embed for a score, including a selected excerpt, with playback directly on the web page. Flat and Noteflight have long treated embedding and web publishing as part of what notation on the web can do, and interactive embedded scores are central to Soundslice as well.
What’s under the hood
ScoreTail’s current About page says that it uses its own notation rendering engine. Its third-party licenses list the SMuFL music fonts Bravura and Leipzig, along with the other open-source components used by the site.
MusicXML reading and writing is handled by Makoto’s MIT-licensed musicxml-io library, while Yjs provides the synchronization for real-time collaboration.
SMuFL, MusicXML, open-source fonts, and web collaboration frameworks mean that an independent developer does not have to invent every layer of a notation application from scratch. A project like ScoreTail is still a large undertaking, but these pieces make it possible.
A deep well of public-domain scores
There is also a large public-domain library of music that you can open, play, and edit.
The familiar Minuet in G included as an example is correctly credited to Christian Petzold rather than Bach, which is always a good start!
I spent most of my time in that score, entering and changing notes, adding some incredibly ingenious lyrics, and looping passages to hear them back. Each score is accompanied by helpful background information and metadata.
What it costs
ScoreTail is free to use: up to ten scores, real-time collaboration, PDF, MusicXML, and MIDI export, share links and embeds, and that public-domain catalog.
A Pro plan at $9.80 a month, with a seven-day trial, lifts the score limit and adds high-quality vector PDF and the booklet imposition, studio-quality audio export, playback videos, and badge-free embeds, and removes the ads that support the free version. Earlier this year, ScoreTail was in beta; it has since grown the paid tier, but the free plan is where most casual users will begin.
Who it’s for, and a first impression
Makoto’s description of ScoreTail as a tool for casual rather than professional users is right. This is not where I would prepare a symphonic orchestral work or a film music cue, for obvious reasons.
But we’re not judging it, or any of the applications in this space, only by the Dorico or Sibelius features it lacks. ScoreTail makes it easy to hand someone a musical document they can open, hear, copy, and — with the right link — edit alongside you.
That collaboration question doesn’t stop with casual users, though. Composers, orchestrators, music preparers, publishers, and orchestra librarians constantly pass scores among one another. With the “big” notation programs, yes, we have digitized the documents of yesteryear, but without changing much about the way they’re handed off: send a file, make a revision, send another file. Digital communication technology makes the whole process speedier, but fundamentally the process hasn’t changed.
Real-time collaboration, sharing, revision tracking, interoperability, and the movement of a score through its lifecycle are all relevant to the 2027 MOLA Tech Fair in San Francisco. A small browser editor and a professional orchestral workflow may seem far apart, but they raise related questions about who works on the score, where that work happens, and how the result reaches everyone who needs it.
This is a first look, not a review. I spent about half an hour with ScoreTail and found it enjoyable and unusually easy to get around, but that is not the same as using it for a substantial project.
The collaboration is where the potential is. ScoreTail has not set out to solve professional collaborative notation. Along with the other players in the space, it shows how straightforward it can be for two people to work in the same musical document at the same time.
