Plucked from Nowhere competition winner announced

Back in July I posted about an exciting composition competition entitled Plucked from Nowhere. To win, entrants had to write a compelling new work for harp and chamber orchestra.

Today, I was contacted by competition organiser Geoffrey Alvarez with the news that the competition’s esteemed jury — including composers Paul Patterson and Roxana Panufnik, as well as virtuoso harpist Elżbieta Baklarz — has decided upon a winner, and that winner is Molly Kien, of Milwaukee, WI, USA, currently residing in Sweden.

Molly’s work The Song of Britomartis will be performed by the Alvarez Chamber Ensemble in their autumn 2010 season, and in the meantime Molly receives a prize of £1000. Honourable mention goes to Jee Soo Shin, whose miniature Har-py was selected to receive a prize of a copy of Sibelius 6, donated by Avid. Congratulations to the winners!

Read all about the deliberations of the jury and find out more about the winning works at the Plucked from Nowhere site.
