Noteflight gets major makeover; webinar scheduled for March 17

The online music notation application and community Noteflight is touting what the company has called a “major makeover” to its product. The significant UI upgrade went live yesterday afternoon, and Noteflight will be walking new and existing users through the changes in a webinar scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 4 pm EDT (8 pm GMT).

Most of our coverage on this blog is devoted to desktop notation software, but Noteflight — which is part of music publishing giant Hal Leonard — is a big player in the digital music notation field. They boast more than 2 million members in their community, making Noteflight the leading browser-based notation product, with collaboration and sharing features that are widely used in educational settings.

President and founder Joe Berkovitz is, along with MakeMusic’s Michael Good and Steinberg’s Daniel Spreadbury, a co-chair of the Music Notation Community Group, which develops and maintains format and language specifications for notated music used by web, desktop, and mobile applications.

Highlights of the Noteflight upgrade include:

New navigation sidebar

Site navigation is moved to a left side panel, accessible by clicking the Noteflight logo in the upper left:

• Recent scores
• User Guide Access
• Sites and Groups (Noteflight Learn customers only)

New account sidebar

A new sidebar on the right organizes all account and language options in one panel, accessible by clicking on the user icon in the upper right.

New Score Editor user interface

• An entirely new look and feel for our HTML5 editor:
• Customizable tool palettes and menus: every editor command is accessible within one simple system.
• New Instruments Panel lets you add, remove, change, and reorder instruments in one place
• Improved mobile performance
• Easy zoom and fit-to-screen options
• Newly updated User Guide for all new features

Improved playback features

When playing back a score, it’s now easy to set the playhead position by tapping on any measure. Pausing and resuming playback is easier too.
