New Scorch release for Mac adds Firefox compatibility

News

Updated – August 9, 2013: Avid has issued an update this morning that resolves the Sibelius preferences issue that was present in the initial release.

ScorchAvid today released version 6.2.0 build 89 for Mac OS X of Scorch, the free web browser plug-in that allows anyone to play Sibelius scores online. This update restores compatibility with Firefox and also adds support for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox and Safari, as well as Chrome (which is only 32-bit).

According to Avid’s Sam Butler:

I’m very pleased to announce the release of an update to our Sibelius Scorch plug-in for Mac that reintroduces support for Firefox.

Not only have we done this, Scorch now runs in 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox and Safari and also Chrome (which is only 32-bit). The latest version of Scorch can be downloaded here:

Many thanks for your patience over the last several months while we worked on getting this update to you.

We have been in touch with all our publishing partners to let them know to update their sites to reflect this release so if you see any blocking messages, please try again later.

The Scorch download page contains the latest installer. Unfortunately, in my experience, the Scorch installer deleted my Sibelius 7 preferences file. I have reached out to Sam for more information and will update this post upon his reply. As noted in the update, the following steps regarding the preference file are no longer necessary because the issue has since been resolved.

In the meantime, if you want to install this new version of Scorch, do the following before running the installer:

  1. Locate your Sibelius preference file. It is located at: Users > [username] > Library > Preferences > com.avid.sibelius7.plist (see this post on OS X Daily for options on how to access and show your Library folder).
  2. Copy this file to another location (e.g., by holding down the option key and dragging the file to your desktop).
  3. Run the Scorch installer.
  4. Drag the preference file back to its original location.

After installing Scorch, restart Firefox, and enable the plug-in in Firefox by going to Tools > Add-ons and clicking Enable next to the Sibelius plug-in in the list.

Note also that Sibelius 7 files do not play back in Scorch automatically. To make your Sibelius 7 file compatible with Scorch, in Sibelius, go to File > Export > Previous Version and export your file to Sibelius 6 format. You can also export a Scorch web page, which will include a Sibelius 6 version of your file along with the HTML code, at File > Export > Scorch Web Page.

I installed on Mac OS 10.6.8 and it does actually work in Safari 64bit without problems.

to specify, it is Safari 5.1.9 and there are no problems (even as it is stated „Mac OS 10.6 … Sibelius Scorch is not compatible with Safari 5“)

Indeed, it works for me as well in Safari, same specs as yours.

What do you expect from Scorch though? It’s had problems since Sib 5 came out.

it is good to have it working at all again :-)

Sibelius 7 scorch plays fine on my system. Also, no problem with the preference file. Nice to see scorch updated. About time :-)
