NAMM 2020: Interview with Noteflight’s John Mlynczak

News

Note: All this week, we’ll be publishing posts from the 2020 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. It’s a huge exhibition, so we’ll focus on what we do best: covering the field of music notation software and related technology. Follow all of our NAMM 2020 coverage at Scoring Notes, and on our social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

In this post, we interview with John Mlynczak, managing director of Noteflight, the web-based music notation software that allows musicians to create, share, teach, sell, and purchase music. If you’re at NAMM 2020, you can find Noteflight at the booth of its parent company, Hal Leonard, in Hall B at booth 8910.

It’s been a busy year for Noteflight since we last caught up with its managing director, John Mlynczak, at last year’s NAMM Show. “Noteflight,” as John has told us before, “is a web-based music notation software that allows musicians to create, share, teach, sell, and purchase music. Everything runs in the browser and is available on any device that can access the internet. Noteflight is a total solution for creating music through selling and purchasing music, all completely legal through Hal Leonard.”

Once again we found time to sit down with John and talk about the latest Noteflight news and developments. We spoke about Noteflight’s integration with Hal Leonard’s catalog, Noteflight Marketplace and the forthcoming offering called ArrangeMe that resulted from the acquisition of Sheet Music Plus, which will officially launch later in 2020.

Other topics included improvements with Noteflight’s embedded interactive player, which aims to simplify the Noteflight experience across all devices, the behind-the-scenes development with MusicXML that was needed to get the product to a satisfactory level, and the importance of having a presence at the NAMM Show.

In our talk, John stressed the importance of the user base. “The amazing team at Noteflight works hard to just put out great software for our users, take their feedback, flip it around, and send it right back.” Later, when discussing the new Lifetime option for Noteflight Premium, he said, “It’s far exceeded expectations. I looked at [the sales] and got teary-eyed; these people have invested in us for the rest of their life!”
